So if you didn’t know I work with a million different groups of kiddos during the day. One of my favorite times of the day is kindergarten writing intervention. We’ve come a long way. We went from working on letter sounds, to labeling pictures, to practicing writing just one dictated sentence while stretching out sounds, and then writing a sentence generated on their own. So we are moving on to bigger and better things. I’m still focusing A LOT on the stretching out of their words and being able to spell their words independently. In fact this was a big lesson this week.
In addition we started an informational writing project. Their first job was to choose an animal they knew a lot about and they received a directed drawing page from Steve Harpster’s books. If you haven’t seen his books, you must. Students start their drawing with a letter or number and build from their. You can check out Steve here. After my students drew their animal, they received a planning sheet, on which they wrote 3 ideas for facts about their animal. We then used those ideas to generate 3 sentences about their animals.
Then the kiddos got really excited. It was time for them to read their writing and publish it in a really fun way. Students used Chatterpix to share their writing. Check out our writing below.
