Reading in our Room!

So if you know me, I’m a little bit particular about my classroom.  Only furniture of primary colors may enter. Everything is labeled and has it place, (except for a few exceptions that hide behind cute curtains) and every book has a special spot.  So I thought I’d share my library organization and how books are leveled.  First the books are sorted in different color bins. Red is fiction, blue is nonfiction, yellow are chapter books and green are poems and song books.

 Reader’s Workshop Book Bins
Leveled books taken home for reading at night
 Our Reading Rainbow
Each part of the rainbow is a level. A (red 1) is a GR. Level A.
A (red 2) is a GR. Level B, (Red 3) is a C, (Orange 1) is a D and so on.
 Books are sorted by topic.
Then they are all leveled according to the rainbow. See the white dot on the corner of the book.
In addition, each book has a sticker that matches the basket’s label.  This way students can easily return them to their proper place.
I absolutely love books. Can you tell? And I love teaching students to read.  And… I really love Reader’s Workshop.

If you want the library labels and matching stickers, they are all available on my site www.fantasticfirstgrade.com

I also just placed a Reader’s Workshop Response Sheets Pack on Teachers pay Teachers.  It included graphic organizers for schema, connections, visualization/mental images, inferences, questioning, synthesis and story elements.
Be sure to check it out.

  1. O.M.G.!!! I am in loooove with this organization! Right now I simply have my books split up by months, but the wheels are a-turnin' for me! I am thinking that my classroom library is going to become my summer project. Thank you so much for the great idea and detailed pics for this visual learner!

  2. I have a leveled library from reading a-z that I use as a nightly reader. I would like to add some more of my own books, but sometime materials are not returned. How do you keep track of all your paper books that you lend to your students?
